Duncan all but nailed down the KZN trainers championship, winning the first two races on Sundays the Scottsville card to go nine ahead of defending champion Dennis Drier. Drier seemingly cant buy a winner, his runners finishing second in the first three races.
With just three meetings left it will take a monumental effort from Drier to retain the championship but Duncan is still cautious. Dennis is a great trainer and he doesnt give in. I wont rest easy until the last race is run next Sunday.
The Howells / De Melo combination has also proved lucrative for the young rider who is having his best season ever. He cracked his century of winners for the season on Girl In Gold in the first and followed up for the stable on Up In Smoke in the second.
Girl In Gold built up nicely to Sundays win and she is a filly that should do even better given more ground. She was seemingly going nowhere through the two-furlong marker but once Keagan picked her up she turn on the heat and won going away. Good luck to Dave MacLean.
The stable were expecting much more from Emmas Oracle in the second but she pulled up lame. However, Duncan says shes a smart filly and will have her day in the sun.
Emmas Oracle may have disappointed but the stable still triumphed as Up In Smoke came away from the field to win well. She was due to be shipped off to stud at Varsfontein, who own the Noordhoek Flyer filly, and at least now has a win behind her name.
