Ruby Spirit is one for the notebook. Duncan is top of the KZN trainers log by stakes won but the yard has been going through a quiet patch of late.
The mood was lifted somewhat by Ruby Spirits comfortable win at Scottsville yesterday. We were pleasantly surprised that he showed so much on debut, said Duncan. If the race had been over 1200m he would probably have won. Its early times but hes got some scope. We have had trouble with his feet but thanks to our farrier Dom Finnis, we seem to have got on top of that problem.
Ruby Spirit showed early as Mark Khan shifted him to the middle of the track to matched strides with favourite Canadian Bolt. Although still showing signs of inexperience, he responded well to Khan’s hands-and-heels urgings drawing off to win a smart race.
Good luck to Dave MacLean. He looks to have smart horse on his hands and given Ruby Spirits pedigree and manner of victory, a step up in trip is on the cards.
