Friday night was all going pear-shaped for Justin Snaith before Do It Again put a smile back on his chops with a superb victory in the Daisy Guineas at Greyville.
Strike one was Oh Suzanna being pulled out of the Guineas with a bruised hoof. Strike two was hot favourite Snowdance going down to Fiorella in the Daisy Fillies Guineas. Strike three was a home run as Do It Again put up his hand for the Vodacom Durban July, coming from last to edge out Sniper Shot in the Guineas.
Its been a hard night. Lots of pressure, admitted Snaith. I didnt expect him to win. He had everything against him first time lights, track running fast and lots of kick-up.
Class prevailed, surmised Bernhard FaydHerbe. We didnt expect him to win but he made up three lengths in four strides.
Last turning for home, the field opened up like the Red Sea and Do It Again roared through the dust. Sniper Shot took a wider route from his outside draw but was also under a wet sail. It was a great run. Hes a really good horse, said Paul Lafferty of his runner-up.
For both runners it was a super warm-up for the Daily News 2000 and the Vodacom Durban July.
For Marcus, victory on Fiorella was tempered by him parting company with his mount as Guineas favourite White River appeared to spook from the sound of the bell signalling for the horses to leave the ring, dumping Marcus heavily.
After a few minutes on the floor, he was up and headed for the First Aid room holding his wrist, his chances of riding Legal Eagle in the Premiers Champions Challenge yesterday, over in a flash.
FaydHerbe was hung out to dry in the Fillies Guineas as Snowdance came up empty over the last few jumps to be snaffled by the Duncan Howells-trained Fiorella.
She ran a cracker of a race, said Howells who roared his filly home in front of the parade ring big screen, coat and spectacles flying. At the top of the straight I thought we may just finish in the money. Then I thought we could finish second and then I thought we could win it. It was just an unbelievable effort from the filly. Good luck to Dave McClean, he deserves this win.
Marcus and Howells bumped heads at Scottsville mid-week but all was forgotten after a superb ride from Marcus. He was hard at work even before the field swung for home, knowing that he was on a fitter horse. This should put a rare smile on his face, quipped Marcus. Im glad I got the veteran jockey back into top gear, countered Howells.
Snowdance was game in defeat but her condition gave out over the last furlong. I thought she would give me three lengths when I asked her to kick but it just wasnt there, concluded FaydHerbe. She just needed it and I couldnt ride my race. I had to get into her to get her going but she just didnt pick it up. She ran a flat race.
Harold Crawford is a doyen of Western Cape racing and a rare visitor to KZN but his decision to send Perovskia for Champions Season paid dividends first up and there may still be more to come.
Perovskia has a reputation of being a difficult horse to pass as favourite Undercover Agent found to his detriment in the Independent On Saturday Drill Hall Stakes as Callan Murray kept his mount hard to his task and the gelding lived up to his reputation.
I was always sure that I was going to get there, said Murray. I was only worried about what was behind me.
The Cup Trial is next up for Perovskia the July maybe. – Gold Circle
