Two winners and a near miss. Wednesdays Greyville meeting on the poly track proved lucrative for the stable as Zenzero won the meeting opener with the consistent Nicklaus finally breaking his hoodoo to win the sixth.
Zenzero, bred by Rob and Michelle Pickering of Middlefield Stud and owned in partnership with Graham Elliott, is a son of Byword who Pickering was instrumental in importing to this country and who now stands at Mauritzfontein Stud.
An ecstatic Pickering gave Duncan a huge hug in the winners enclosure. Jeez! That Robs a strong bastard. He nearly squeezed the life out of me, said Duncan.
Zenzero came with a telling late run under Keagan de Melo to nail the favourite on the line and is a horse that appears to be looking for further than a mile.
Wild Wicket was the more fancied of the stables two runners in the sixth but Nicklauss superior fitness on the day proved telling. Nicklaus had twice been relegated in the boardroom for causing interference but Anthony Delpech took no chances this time as he kept Nicklaus wide on the outside fence and out of the way of any trouble. Wild Wicket made up good ground on his stable companion and with that run under his girth should come on lengths.
Nicklaus has been a soldier for Steven Chetty and is still going strong at seven years of age.
