Wild Wicket, pictured winning the Gr3 Michael Roberts Handicap at Scottsville, ran a cracker in Saturdays eLan Gold Cup, finishing third to Its My Turn and last years winner, Hermuso Mundo. Wild Wicket shows that he stays well and a year older come Tuesday, he will come into his own as a five-year-old.
Stayers naturally mature later in their careers but South African trainers tend to write off older horses, possibly as staying races are few and far between. Staying races that offer a decent stake are like hens-teeth unless you are prepared to tour the country but a high class stayer with a little luck on their side can more than earn their keep.
Good luck to Dave Maclean who is a staunch supporter of the stable.
